Fortitudo nos Vocat (Courage Calls Us)!
Introduction: The eternal flame of Roma is extinguished, for now the fire now burns in the east where in the year 527ad Justinian has come to the throne. To the east the Sassanids stand ready to invade in the west great gothic hordes now occupy the once great western half of the Roman empire. The world is harsh can you survive in the wilderness that is the known world. The great statemen of the age are there, Belisarius, Mundus and Liberius are all awaiting the ascndance of the empire. The Eastern Roman empire is now all that is left of Ancient Rome, will they continue to climb or will they fall and disappear into obscurity.
Aim of the Game: As a player you will be the Paterfamilias of your family, and will be responsible for its ascendancy. You will be responsible for ensuring that your young family members are married off for political or any other reasons. Now this game is not about money and landownership. The game is centred around the players capacity to roleplay and write scenarios. Nothing is set during the time of FNV so there will be a level of reaction from players.
Wealth: Wealth is money, you earn wealth through your dealings with other families and through the work you perform for the empire. Remember this game is not about being the richest its about your families progress through time. Wealth provides you another outlet for you to Role Play.
Families: When you start the game, you start as the Paterfamilias of your own family line, you will be given a chance to choose which line you come from, them either being Plebian, Equestrian or Patrician. The Plebian social rank will not allow you to recruit Bucelarii until you have been raised to the social rank of Equestrian. The Equestrian and Patrician social ranks will allow you to start your military careers at the Protectores level, a protectores is a cadet officer, please remember this as your family expands. As an Equestrian you cannot recruit Bucelarii. Once you reach the heady heights of the patrician level you will be allowed to recruit Bucelarii.
Family Orders: - The family orders are placed in your family orders tread which is located on the site. Family orders are submitted once a week, please do not post multiple order threads instead please keep it to one thread. Each set of orders will be given one hour of GM time for completion, to make sure you get done what is most important to you please ensure that you list your orders in terms of preference as the GM’s will work through your orders from top to bottom. Keep your orders clear and easy to understand. Every week the game will advance six months meaning a years game time will progress every two weeks. Once you have submitted your orders, you are then free to begin any roleplaying and such other events that have occured over the period of time.
Family Holdings: Here is a list of where you can spend all that hard earned money that you have been accumulating for you family. There are certain rules that you must follow, one this game is is not about massive accumulation of funds you earn money through your family positions and other negotiations. You do not buy property to make money, you build property to allow your family the luxuries of life. At the start of the game you already have a family Domus, as your family grows you will need to ensure they are well cared for and provided for.
To be able to build new Domus’ and Villa’s you must first buy a plot of land to build it on, there are varying sizes in which you can buy, they are listed below, when buying land you must make sure you know where it is you are buying this land:

Now that you have bought your land, you need to decide what you wish to put on the land, the first thing you need to build is home to control the land around it. Everything requires space, so the larger you build the more space it will require. You cannot to continually add to your land so you need to decide what you require from your land, alternatively you can buy a home within a city but you are not able to add anything to it. Marriage: - One of the key aspects of Late Roman and Byzantine family life was ensuring your children were married to gain you either money and honour or political alliance. FNV is no different, every turn you will be issued a list of all the available bachelors and bachlorettes that are in game, ladies become eligible from fourteen years of age and will appear on the list from there on in. Men will appear on the list also from the age of fourteen. As the pater familias it is your responsibilty that you marry correctly.
To make an offer of marriage you will need to send and offer of marriage through your family orders, you should state what you are offering and be clear who you wish to marry and to whom. Here is an example of how your order should look:
Lucius Anthemeus Pater Familias wishes to marry his son Petricus Anthemeus to Aemillia Fulvio, Lucius offers 20 Wealth and 10 Honour Points to solidify the marriage.
As you can see you have several things you can barter with, you can also add family holdings or even offer a political alliance with certain stipulations, be warned you break that alliance you will suffer. I wont say how! But you may find that your wife has run off with all your money, for a young imperial officer, you have been warned.
Once your order has been sent the person receiving will have a chance to accept or refuse the offer. Again you must state so within your orders.
Inheritance: Well inheritance is very basic, for your children to inherit your families wealth you must name a successor, this must be done through your family orders. If you die without leaving an heir you will lose everything as it will all go to the state. Who will use it to there own devices.
Career Progression: Career progression is dependant on you earning prestige and honour points. Every position costs certain amount of honour or prestige points or perhaps both. Not just for you but to also get your family members into positions also. Remember as Paterfamilias you are responsible for ensuring that all your family members get decent positions, you cannot jump from more than one placement at anyone time. All this is to represent the fact you will have to use your influence to gain positions for your family.

The Bucelarii well the personal troops of the lord who recruited them, in Belisarius’ case, during the north african campaign against the Vandals he had 7,000 Bucelarii with him. To recruit Bucelarii you need to build a Bucelarii barracks on your property, this is because you need to be able to quarter your troops. Bucelarii are heavy cavalry and you are able to recruit a single Bucelarii, as well as a unit leader. Each barrack you build is able to support 500 men and horses. Battles and Campaigns: How battles and campaigns are decided is a secret and is only known to the GM’s, respect the GM’s final result even though it may not be to your liking. Being the beginning of the reign of Justinian there is going to be plenty of opportunity for bounty and blood, so dont be dismayed if your not in the action there is still plenty to do in a world that is rife with banditry, intrigue and plotting. If you are commanding in a battle you will be given a certain timeline to send in your battle/campaign orders. If you do not send in your orders on time your NPC’s will take command of the battle and when this usually happens battles become very bloody affairs. Manpower is not guarenteed in the Byzantine world, so dont waste it.
The Agentes in Rebus - The Agentes in Rebus are the after thought of the Frumentarii and are feared in equal measure. These men are spies in imperial service and report directly to the Magister Officorum. For the purpose of the game if you join the Agentes, the family member that has joined the Agentes will be given a code name so no one will know who the man is. This is to create an air of mystery plus create a level of fear as you will not know who the man is unless his identity is revealed. The Agentes are allowed to practice imperial judicial judgement to carry out there tasks, and on many occasions it has been known for a Agentes to have an entire cohort decimated to ensure he has captured muitnous soldiers.
Members of the Agentes were chosen from all classes and were placed all over the realm to watch the empires loyal retainers. As a result you will not know which of your family members are Agentes if they are one at all.
As Magister Officorum it is your responsibility to form a dossier and spy network to support your needs throughout the realm, if you wish to recruit you must say how many you want recruited, you will only be able to recruit 5 Agentes per year.
As Magister Officorum you will be sent a list of all agents but you will only be sent there code names and locations. Not who they are. To send orders you must send them in as separate orders stating in the message as Agentes Orders.
