The doors to the Imperial Palace finally open just wide enough for Bacchus to walk out to address the angry mob, he is wearing full armor and has a sword.
He raised his arms and addressed the crowd, "Romans! Today you have been misled. These men who lead you have poisoned you with lies about my character. They have armed you and told you to attack the legally appointed representative of your Emperor. They have stated that God's wrath is the result of my religious heritage. Yet the Book of Hebrews tells us that our leaders watch over us, and that it is right to obey them.
Do you not think it likely, then, that God's wrath has been brought upon us because these men have been scheming and plotting against God's will? I have only led, as I was legally appointed to do."
Bacchus held up the original document naming him Dictator de Interrex.
"This is my proof. This is the document that will seal the fate of any man who raises arms against me, if not in this world, than in the one hereafter. I tell you people I am no heretic. Before God, Jesus, and you people I swear now that I am not. Do not allow these men to consign your eternal souls to torment and sin. Take your chance now. Let the bloodshed end. I intend to go to my home now. Any man who leaves and goes to his will still have a chance to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I hope that you all take that chance."
Bacchus then strides towards the crowd… but he is stopped by the Patriarch of Constantinople who gestured to the crowd to stop as well.
Then Emperor Justin appeared on the balcony of the Great Palace with Narses. Narses on behalf of the Emperor reads out a proclamation.
“After consultation with my guardians and the Patriarch of Constantinople. We have agreed to prevent any further bloodshed tonight. The Dictator wished to guarantee my safety so ordered his soldiers to put down what he believed to be a rebellion against me. However the blood of citizens has been split. As our lord and saviour
taught repentance and forgiveness, so I shall follow in his teachings. The Dictator and his soldiers are hereby ordered to be sent across the Bosporus to Asia where they will march east to engage the impending Sassanid invasion. There they shall repent for their sins and gain our forgiveness”.
Some members of the crowd attempt to start further trouble but they are stopped by the soldiers of Flavius Liberius who accept the orders of their Emperor. The Domestici under Germanus form a guard around Bacchus and his Bucelarii, who escort them to the docks of Constantinople where the navy shuttle them across to Asia to begin their exile in the east.
Epilogue
Dictator Bacchus Solomanos and his soldiers have been ordered to leave the city and head east to fight the impending Sassanid invasion. The crowd has largely disbanded, although some fires and looting is still taking place. Narses and Germanus have called a Regency Council and sent word for the Empire’s top generals and leaders to come to Constantinople to discuss the future of the Empire.
