Petrus Marcellinus Liberius had seen Gaius and Darius arrive with their wives and escorted to seats close to him and his family. He smiled to him self they looked a tad nervous being so close to the seat of power ....
During a lull he took time to introduce his wife and sons and their wives to Giaus and Darius. Leaving his sons and their wives to talk to Darius and Giaus wives, whilst he took them aside and spoke to them.
Giaus, Darius, you are probably wondering why I invited you and asked for you to be seated so close to me?
Not waiting for them to reply he went on, the reason is that I have heard good things of you both and that you also seem to have forged some sort of bond as fellow officers.
This is good for no man is an island he needs friends, good reliable friends to advance in life. I have taken an interest in your careers and will continue to follow them, hence the postings you have currently been assigned. I would hope that if you are in need of any assistance that you may call upon on me and I will look favorably upon it , if it is within my remit.
After the feast I in the morning I would ask you both to call upon me in my office to have a more in depth talk about matters military.
Over to Darius and Giaus feel free to continue the conversation and expand it

"By Saint Barnabas book, Darius!" whispered Gaius.
For this patronage, Gaius knew he must be ready to pay something, probably his life. Such was the way of a soldier. He did have wants, needs, and hopes of a career.
"Petrus Marcellinius Liberius, I am most grateful for your consideration. I shall attend in the morning then."
After the astonishment passed in these august surroundings and a cup of wine had been taken, Gaius found some time to hear the speeches and consider the risks that might come his way.

Petrus Marcellinus Liberius continued, see all these great men about you, and he swept his arm around the room.
They too started just like you, the advantage you may have over them is that you have my patronage and good wishes for your future. Rest assured I would not take any thing from you or demand anything from you that would cause offense or dishonor you or your family.
is there any thing you would ask of me, any thing?

His new patron pressed on in conversation. Anything? What makes a man worth anything at all. Family.
"Lord Liberius, I would ask one thing foremost. I have in my family only two young children. When I am away on campaign or service they have little protection or education. I ask for my family your protection. For their education I would gladly pay a tutor."
He could bring them along in the camps, but if he could protect them here, it would be better.

Looking at Gaius he replied, yes that is no problem they will come under my protection. I will assign some of my men as family bodyguards while you are away and I am sure your wife can visit us as often as she likes.

"Thank you Lord Liberius. I must tell you also that I have no wife. My late wife died of illness last last year. I do look about for one, but none seemed interested in joining my family."

My dear Gaius please forgive me, I did not know. In that case whilst you are away they can stay at my Domus safely with protection whilst you serve. If that meets with your approval?

"I am greatly honored by your offer Lord Liberius."

It was a truly incredible offer. Why, however, did Liberius even consider him worthy of his attention? "I'm humbled by your offer good sir. I hardly feel worthy of your attentions. I don't have anything worthwhile to offer in return."

Looking at Darius, he replied I seek nothing, each man requires a patron to ascend the steps of power and promotion, as i said no man is an island. Should you not wish my patronage, then that is fine no ill feeling will be felt on my behalf, as I understand you may have another sponsor.....
However I will still require you both in my office in the morning
