After he was allowed entrance, Gaius Porcius greeted his new patron.
"Good morning, Magister Liberius. I trust that the day begins well for you."

"Greetings Giaus please take a stool and help your self to refreshments from the table, once Darius gets here I will begin the military topic.
By the way since you are leaving shortly for your new unit have you arranged for your children to come over to my Domus for safe keeping and I can arrange for suitable educator for them as well while you are away?"
Looking down at a tablet he continued " I can arrange security of your Domus as well if you require it?"

"All of that would be most welcome, Lord Liberius."
Gaius accepted the refreshments offered. He needed to put on some weight in any case. Campaigns were never easy on a body and some fat would do him good.
Although he had taken wine aplenty the night before, there was no question of his trusting Liberius. Liberius had offered to protect his family and his home in a public manner. A master was as he was, nothing more or less. Gaius had no frivolous requests to make here. *unless you made arrangements, I have no idea when Darius will reply.

OOC we will carry on Gaius
Shouting for a slave Marcellinus says " Bring me the items I have for Gaius"
Looking at Gaius he smiled, "Just a little going to war present for you Gaius""
Minutes later 3 slaves enter, 1 is carrying an ornate wooden box whilst the other 2 are between them carrying Armour and a helmet. Putting them down they bow and leave.
Marcellinus walks over to the wooden box picking it up he offers it to Gaius saying " No officer should go into battle with out proper battle equipment and foremost amongst them is the sword" saying so he opens the box to reveal an very expensive but soldier like sword engraved with Giaus name.
"This with the Armour will mark you out amongst the men and ensure that your status is is not mistaken, the down side is that enemy may too realize that" he said with a grin....
The amour is of the best quality and designed to give the wearer the impression of a sculptured body whilst protecting him for attack. The helmet too is similarly fashioned .

"Blessed Matthew," Gaius sighed.
He was very pleased with the gifts offered. These would indeed make him a better looking officer. Gaius knew that held little confidence in most soldiers, but it could help in some ways.
"My great Lord, I am humbled by your generousity for one who has yet to serve," he responded.
He took up the sword, stepped safely away and tested its weight and swing. "Excellent!" It then occured to him that he would need a slave to carry all this home with him. La! In a short while, he set down the sword.
"Tell me, Lord Liberius, to what do I owe this interest in my career and well being?" No man of power extends his hand freely.

Giaus, when I was young I too was much like you in some ways, I also had a good friend who started on the path to promotion at the same time. I was lucky and had a great patron , he did not and as such his career suffered, although he was better in all things than me.
I went on to become a Senator of Rome before coming here, whilst he stayed a senior tribune of the Roman army.
I see much of us in you and Darius, I offer nothing more than the chance to fulfill your destiny with me giving you a helping hand so speak along the way.
As stated before I would never ask anything of you that would dishonor or cause you offense. All I may ask is that you take up certain posts, not because I am plotting anything, but because I am trying to guide you along the cursus honorum as it was once called.
The 3 slaves will assist you in carrying the Armour etc to where ever you wish once finished have they sent back to my Domus.

Gaius accepted the words of a powerful lord, for a master is as he is.
"I shall honor your house in these posts you choose for me. First, however, I shall make effort to survive the campaign necessary to achieve them," he laughed.
Taking up posts as ordered? Well and good then. Rather like the races where the drivers jockeyed for positions, sometimes only to do so at the call of those who paid for the entertainment and wished to buy the victory.

Being guided by Liberius' house servant to the meeting area, Darius appeared in the typical state purchased armor of a Tribune. He gave Liberius a salute before taking the hand of his friend Gaius and Liberius himself in turn. "My apologies if I am late good sir, my wife was intent on prolonging the morning as long as possible."

Welcome Darius, I as I had explained to Gaius here I offer you the hand of my Patronage if you would have it?
If you accept then please tell me if there is anything I may do for you.
In the mean time... Marcellinus claps his hands and a servant enters.
Please bring the items for Darius Marius.
He leaves and a minute later 3 slaves enter carrying the same items as presented to Gaius: Am ornate wooden box, armour and a helmet.
The box is given to Marcellinus , who in turn hands it to Darius and says here are your tools of battle, exactly the same as I have given to Gaius.
There is no obligation to me if you do not wish me to be your patron, you may keep the gifts no matter what.

Darius was stunned by the incredible offer, and smiled apologetically as soon as he could rationalize his thoughts. "I appreciate the very generous offer sir, but as a matter of pride, my father always taught me that it was best to earn, rather than receive, one's blessings."

It is of no consequence Darius, please keep the gifts.
Now if either of you have any more questions....?
I believe your new units are ready and waiting for you.
Go forth for the Emperor and the Empire and as the Spartans used to say "come back on your shields or with victory"
